Thoughts on my first week doing my professional practices 😲

This last week was strangely particular for me. First, I'm starting to like teaching online, I mean, obviously, it's not the same as working in a face-to-face classroom but yet it is not so bad as I used to think scarcely 4 weeks ago.
Thanks to all my self-preparation I had in courses and collective feedback with some peers at work, I had a true change of heart towards the stigmas about e-learning:

  1. When teaching online, you have to be even more aware of time management because nobody likes to be in front of a screen doing something that it's not interesting for 2 hours straight, or worse, for 5 hours long on a Saturday morning.
  2. Adapting your teaching style is not enough. You need to re-build your teaching if you want to succeed as an e-teacher.
  3. The type of platform you're using DOES matter and I'm not referring to money or how if it is a free site. What I mean is that you gotta know well all of the features that you have at your reach within the app or site you're working with.

I have learned by experience these days that exploiting our platforms appropriately can make a big difference in the way we teach and how our students adapt to these conditions. Teachers can make it even harder for to students get used to the "new environment" without even noticing it by only speaking about the topic without major interaction with the group or by just showing pictures or videos that they are going to repeat orally later. The excuse here could be that "we are not in a physical place to have interaction" but that completely wrong.

You can give an engaging twist to an online class by using breakout rooms to have the students working in teams, you can implement time-fillers like online games or you can do a fun activity where they predict a picture using the structures you're teaching among other things.

Last but not least, if you were using a printed student's book in class, you don't have to leave it aside only because you cannot check it as in a classroom. Implement it by using collective feedback in an interactive way. Bear in mind that they already have had an expense on that book and it's not fair for them to waste it. Plus, it results really useful to measure and monitor their progress in the language. AVOID EXCESS of the book!.

I hope these pieces of advice result useful to you!

  1. I agree with you Ali. Using the same activities over and over is not an option. As an e-teacher it is crucial to think out of the box and re-think our professional practice. Cheers on what you've done so far 😊😊

  2. There is so much left to learn about e-learning. We have literally created a distance education system in a couple of weeks with little to no preparation or support.
